Seeds of Tradition
Growing vegetables has always been something very close to my heart. My love for gardening began when I was young, after I brought home a small tomato plant from Camp Fire Girls. I had no idea at the time that something so simple would create such a meaningful connection between my father and me.
From that moment on, we gardened together. My dad taught me how to prepare the soil, carefully plant the vegetables, water and tend to them, and eventually enjoy the reward of harvesting something we had grown ourselves.
My father was from one of the Ionian Islands of Greece, where his family also had a garden that helped feed and nourish their families for generations. Through him, gardening became more than simply growing food. It became a connection to my family, my heritage, and generations of people who understood the importance of caring for the land and enjoying what it provides.
Today, when I spend time in the garden, I think of my dad. Gardening brings me back to those special moments we shared and reminds me that, in my own small way, I am continuing a family tradition that began generations before me.
